Louisville Wildlife Education: Opossum Exterminator
Opossums are reliant on the scraps, that are thrown out by humans, in order to survive. In rural areas, they are less of an issue than they are in urban areas. In urban areas, they intrude upon your home and dig in your garden. The best way to get rid of an opossum is to find a wildlife removal expert. They are equipped to deal with wild animals when you are unable to do so yourself.
Pest or wild animal?
Opossums might be considered pests but in reality, they are classified as wild animals. In most states across the United States, it is illegal to kill or trap wild animals. Exterminators are equipped to rid your home of unwelcome pests. They cannot legally kill an opossum. Exterminators are not licensed to kill any wild animal that may be intruding into your home. If you are found to be in violation of the law, you might be liable to massive fines.
Poisoning
Exterminators that promise to help you will likely poison the opossums. This will lead to a very painful death for the animal. As the opossum is of larger size than the pests that are usually killed with poison they will also take longer to die. It could take up to four weeks for the poison to take effect. This could lead to them dying away from your property where their carcass could be eaten by scavengers.
Trapping
Different traps that can be used to catch an opossum. The best one to use is a non-lethal one. These are not the traps utilized by exterminators. Their objective is to kill any offending pest that is found to be intruding on your property. Few will use lethal traps but they are not always trained in how to catch live animals in order to relocate them.
Animal control
There are instances where you are able to phone animal services. If the opossum comes across as sick or seems to pose a threat to the lives of humans animal control can be called to remove it.
Better options
In the case of an opossum in your home, your best bet would be to try and get rid of it yourself. In order to do this, you can purchase a humane trap that will allow you to release the opossum unharmed. You can also install a one-way exclusion funnel. This means that once the opossum has vacated the property they will be unable to use the same entryway again.
The only sure-fire way to keep your home free of opossums is to close off all points of entry. You need to ensure that there is no way for them to gain entry to your home.
You can also make your property less appealing to them. There are multiple ways to do this.
· Remove all sources of food or water that can attract them. This includes moving bowls of uneaten pet food.
· Make sure your garbage cans are locked or stored where the cannot reach it.
